You are here: Wetlands
Wetlands
From Alberta’s northern boreal forests to the southernmost tip of the province, from east boundary to west, wetlands are found throughout the Alberta landscape.
Although close to 21% of the province is covered by wetlands, over time wetlands in Alberta have been significantly altered or destroyed by urban sprawl, expanding agriculture and other human development.
But the view that wetlands are just wastelands is changing. People are realizing their ecological, social and economic importance and their need to be conserved and protected.
In this section you will learn more about types of wetlands, what wetlands have to offer and why wetland conservation is so important.
